Thursdays are for Weekend Backpacks! On the last day of National Volunteer Month, we’re celebrating the absolutely awesome crew of volunteers who keep this vital program running smoothly. It truly takes a village!
Thanks to our amazing volunteers who organize, pack, and deliver backpacks to more than 40 area schools, over 350 students head into the weekend feeling secure about their next meal. What makes this team truly special is the commitment, dedication, energy, and joy they bring to the office every week.
Big smiles and lots of laughter define this group—and we just know the students we serve can feel it too.

Our Stories

Volunteer Spotlight
“I retired 2 years ago and was looking for a way to give back! I love meeting clients and helping them get through the challenges they face. I am so proud to be part of this organization which is making a positive impact on the Greater Hartford community.” –Kathi

Client Spotlight
Words from an anonymous client graduating from our program: “When we signed up we did not know what to expect and were very nervous…but at the start, we felt genuine care and compassion from everyone. This has been an awesome experience. This place is a loving, caring institution, and I did not expect the amount of support we were given.”

Volunteer Spotlight
Arlene started volunteering with us 25 years ago when she and her husband moved to Avon. A neighbor recommended Gifts of Love and she has been here ever since. Formerly an RN in NYC, Arlene raised her three daughters here in Avon and now has five grandchildren. She continues her volunteer work because she believes in our mission and cherishes the friendships she has made at GOL through the years.
