National Volunteer Week Michael

We’re proud to spotlight Michael, one of our most dedicated volunteers, who shares what giving back at Gifts of Love means to him, in his own words!

“My name is Michael. I’ve been volunteering at Gifts of Love for almost six months now. I found out about it through my brother—he had volunteered at the end of this past summer—and I thought it was a great way to give back to the community.
I bring clients around, and I also help with stocking the food pantry and working in the clothing section, going through donations and putting out clothes and other items.
I think it’s just a really good way to give back. It’s a local community, and it’s about doing your part to make the world a little bit better than you found it. Whether that’s taking clients around, hearing their stories, interacting with them, and helping them get what they need, or helping stock donations so everything looks its best so people can come in and get the great things we have here.
I’ve also helped with the backpack program, delivering to students and families in need. It’s just a great way to give back, and I’m really happy to be a part of it—really grateful.
I think working with clients is about the relationships. You get to experience someone else’s perspective. They may be going through difficult times, and I like to come in with a sense of respect and a little levity—trying to lighten the mood and make it as positive an experience as possible for both of us. I feel like I learn a lot from those interactions and from other people.
For anyone thinking about volunteering, I would say come to Gifts of Love. There are many different things to do. If you want to build relationships and enjoy working with people, you can work with clients. If you’re looking to help when you have time, you can stock the food pantry or support programs like the backpack program.
It’s a good way to give back and be part of the local community—just doing a little bit of good and hopefully making a bigger impact for others.
I’m just really happy to be here and grateful for the opportunity.”
